The Dads Must Be Crazy Ep. 28: A Very Star Trek/Wars Christmas

We open this week's podcast with a lot of talk about the Buffalo Bills and their win over the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Bobby, as a Dallas fan, has a unique perspective on the teams. We all have our Christmas decorations up, and now it's on to shopping for the holidays. Guys definitely have a different view of Christmas shopping. Well, except for Howie. He is really into it. Meanwhile, we veer off into nerd talk when we discuss the upcoming Star Trek additions. We implore CBS to give us Captain Worf. We need Michael Dorn to get all Klingon with the brass to make it happen. That would be a great Christmas present for us.

Reminiscing: TV Land

I really don’t watch a lot of television, although my wife would sometimes like to beg to differ. Really, I don’t watch that much television. There are occasional days where it never even gets turned on. Honestly, when you figure that the average American in my age group watches over 33 hours a week, I am far behind my peers. It’s just about five hours a day in front of the tube. Two hours is about all I can handle these days.

Thinking Out Loud: Fun Degrees of Separation

What follows is me trying to be creative. Throughout my career, I've dabbled in something like this as a professional twice. Once, I rewrote The Who's Pinball Wizard and made it all about the weather. Another time, I changed the words to Let It Go from Disney's Frozen to complain about how often it was on at my house when it came out.

Well, as I mentioned earlier this week, I took my daughter to go see Wonder Woman. There was an actor in the movie who connects Wonder Woman from the DC Universe to the Marvel Universe and the Star Trek Universe and the Star Wars Universe. So, here goes nothing...

We took the plunge last weekend and bought the twins phones. I hated to do it, and I wished that we could have waited just a bit longer. They’ll be thirteen next week, and I thought they were still just a bit young. I was hoping for another year or two before we had to get them phones. However, with them going away for a band trip, they needed to be able to stay in contact with us.

I turned 40 a couple years ago. I had a big party and they tell me it was a very good time. But, now that I’ve entered my 40s, I’ve officially become old according to every teenager on the planet. While I don’t feel nor act old, I do have some questions firmly from the Land of Curmudgeon. There were some questions from childhood that have yet to be satisfactorily answered.

Looking at Movies (First Run) - Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Before anyone gets the crazy notion that there could be many more Star Trek movies to come with this cast, both Zachary Quinto (Spock) and Karl Urban (Bones) have indicated that this may be it for them. Quinto indicated that he might be interested in a fourth movie, but that would be it. The reason I find this sad and significant is that it looks like this rebooted series finally got a Star Trek movie right, and now it may be one of the last ones. The first movie was good, but the second one was a disaster. I am not surprised that removing J.J. Abrams from the director's chair has resulted in the best movie of the trilogy.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Waiting at the Drive-In

Saturday night at the Sunset Drive-In in Middleport. We took all four girls to see "Star Trek: Beyond" and "Ghostbusters." Amazingly, the girls stayed awake for both features. Although drive-ins are disappearing across the country, in the Lockport area, we are fortunate to have 2 theaters with a total of 8 screens.
